As someone who had an iPhone 3G for just over a year before switching to the nexus, I can tell you it was worth it to me.

I can tell you that I do miss some of my apps, but for the most part the core of all the main applications are there.

The main iPhone applications that I used:

Wordpress
Things
Movies (Flixter)
iReddit
Wikipanion
Classics
Pandora
Pocket Tunes
Convert
Tweetie
Facebook
USAA
WeatherBug
Shazam
CNN
Redlaser
eBay
plus a lot of Games.

This is more or less the application equivalents or official apps on the Nexus (Android)

Wordpress
Astrid
Movies (flixter)
reddit is fun
Quickpedia
Aldiko (books app)
Pandora
No equivalents to Pocket Tunes that I can find.
Have not found a good converting utility. (I’m sure there is one)
Twidroid
Facebook
USAA
Weatherbug
Shazam
NewsRoom + USA Today
Shopsavy
eBay

So you can see that there was either an official app or an equivalent that was just as good. Now you will notice there are games missing off of my list, and if you are looking for a gaming platform, then this is not the device for you right now.

There are virtually no major 3D games on the market right now, and this is because of a limitation of the ROM size. It does not store applications on the SD card. Instead it keeps them in ROM memory, and you are limited to 512 MB.

It is not the “pretty” device that apple has made, but you get the freedom of not being reliant on a “Apple approved proccess” where you are solely reliant on single company to control what you can install on your device.

On the Android, if you want to install something that is not in the market, then it is as simple as going into your setting and selecting an option to install unapproved store apps. That in my opinion is a much improved way of doing business, rather then having to jailbreak you phone and hope you can keep up with the cat and mouse game with Apple.

One of the cool things that I have come to love and hate are the widgets. They are the things on screen like clocks, twitter client, weather updater, etc. I like them because they present an easy way to present data. You can look down and easily know what time it is, what the weather outside is, what tweets there are, and current news.

What I don’t like about them is then present a problem with how they drain the battery life, and just like on any Linux system, poorly coded ones can do really bad things. An example of a poorly coded on is a weather/clock widget. It put my phone in an infinite reboot state. It took me a good hour trying to figure out how to fix that.

One of the things that I was really disappointed with coming over from the iPhone was the music player. It is just not anywhere near as good as the iPhones. Still very usable, but not that ‘Wow’ experience of the iPhone.

Now I have to talk about Google Navigation. WOW!!! That is just a mind blowing experience. I can’t believe they are providing this for free. I have a GPS, and I have not used it since I got this phone. It is that good. I would not take it with me if I was doing a really big trip, just for the fact that the maps are not loaded on the device, but the inner city, it is unmatched.

I also like the compass. I did not have the 3GS, so I can’t make a direct comparison to iPhone, but it does make for some interesting apps and more accurate navigation.

The camera is great. I have not really taken a bad picture with it yet. It has an auto focus on it, so that was big improvement from what I had before.

But the one thing that really sold me on it is the Google integration. The Gmail, Maps, Goggles, Google Voice (heavy user), Listen, YouTube, Earth, and SkyMap are all so well integrated.

I can’t say enough good things about the Gmail integration. It just does everything that you can do on the regular website and in an intuitive way. With iPhone, the integration was OK at best, but with this you feel like you are in complete control.

I also love the Google Voice application. It is wonderfully integrated. You do not even know that you are using it with the exception that a bubble comes up when you are placing a call that you are going through Google voice.

So to sum it up, if you are not a heavy gamer, then I think the Android OS will only get better and with it being open source it will allow more open development. It the feature does not exist, then someone somewhere will create it.

I hope this helps. And if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
